The Team – Marcia Danton-Rees, the commercial force in the business

Marcia Danton-Rees, co-director of Capital Models and wife of founder Robert, is the commercial force behind the business.

As part of the 2006 HSBC Achievement Awards celebrating women in business, Marcia was invited to the prestigious Ice Ball Black Tie event held at The Brewery in Chiswell Street, London, which she attended with husband Robert.

Marcia showed early talent, being a child star of crafts and sewing competitions, winning a number of regional finals for Singer, McCalls and Kellogg’s. She appeared on Magpie at a young age and was often featured in the local press for her outstanding achievements.

Whilst doing her A' levels she completed a City and Guilds Fashion Design course and she met Robert on an Art Foundation Course at West Surrey College of Arts in Farnham back in 1977.

She gained a BSC (Hons) Textile Design and Technology at Huddersfield Polytechnic – the four year course including one year industrial training at The Woolly Mill in Langholm, Scotland.

1984 was a key year for Marcia as she met Robert again and romance blossomed, and she started to work for Crochetta London Ltd. The company had a number of knitwear outlets in London and all over the world, including a large knitwear factory in Gozo, Malta employing about 300 workers. This hard work and extensive experience proved to be invaluable when Marcia decided to set up her own knitwear business.

In 1989 she decided to change direction and did some secretarial and accountancy training, which took her to a firm of Chartered Surveyors. She thoroughly enjoyed working there and stayed until her boss retired in 1994. She then went on to work for Sheikh Farsi for the next 2 years, managing his art collection and portfolio of UK properties.

Marcia joined Robert at Capital Models in 1996, and soon made her mark on the two-year old business helping build the successful business it is today. She shares Robert’s strong ethics, always trying to do what is best for the client and to be collaborative in the way they have approached that.

Marcia’s business training and acumen soon proved invaluable, especially when the company was faced with challenges such as increasing financial overheads and greater competition. Marcia was instrumental in adopting a different mind set and being open to ideas from those who were perhaps more commercially minded, willing to be advised and steered in the right direction. Today, Capital Models is a leading light in the industry and a preferred resource for world renowned architects and developers.

Feature – The numerous applications of laser-cutting

Three state-of-the-art laser cutters have enabled Capital Models to branch out of traditional architectural model making and develop a flourishing business producing awards for companies across a range of sectors and sizes.

We can cut most materials including paper, card, acrylic, thin wood, leather and fabrics. This gives us the opportunity to offer you something different from the usual award or trophy, with a custom made design to suit your image. This can be an elaborate piece in line with your corporate identity or a simple engraved block – with a twist.

Recent commissions include work for organisations as diverse as ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers), Travelodge and the Osteopathic Centre for Children in Sri Lanka. Other pieces can be seen on our website

News: Architectural model displayed at British Museum

The model of this unusual building, commissioned by Zaha Hadid Architects, was recently displayed for two weeks at the British Museum – another testimonial of Capital Models’ unique ability to bring brilliant ideas to life.

The building itself is currently being constructed in Dubai.

Perspective: Beyond architecture into the exhibitions world

Over the years Capital Models have combined their outstanding model making skills with impressive, state-of-the-art laser cutting capabilities, which enable them to undertake a broad spectrum of assignments in addition to their core architectural model making expertise.

The company now works on a regular basis with exhibition designers and builders, events companies, graphic designers and photographers, fulfilling requirements ranging from prototypes, exhibition stands, point-of-sale, props, sets and display items for shops, windows, exhibitions and TV programmes.

Here are examples of recent commissions:

Shop display - Capital Models made this display for Bombay Sapphire including light boxes acrylic shelves, delivered and installed them in the duty free shop in Valencia airport.

Exhibition stand - Capital Models made a large cigarette box about x6 actual size and cut out the Gargoyle and the After Hours logo, part of an exhibit currently on tour to various exhibitions around the world.

Strawberry Tables – These were made as a centre piece for the end of year show for the Architectural Association.

Made from CNC machined 18mm birch ply, slotted together and sprayed yellow, the Perspex bowls were filled with strawberries.

Outdoor exhibition – Commissioned by Islington Council, this oversized easel was for a one day art event on the street near Farringdon station.

Corporate events – Capital Models were asked to produce a collection of ‘Aliens’ for a themed corporate event at Madame Tussauds. Eyes and heads moved by remote control.
