Architectural models on display at the Guggenheim Museum
A couple of months ago we completed a model for Zaha Hadid Architects, the renown firm of architects recently shortlisted for the The RIBA Stirling Prize with the Phaeno Science Center in Wolfsburg, Germany.

The model we produced is of a 34-storey tower for a new development in Marseilles, designed for the French Shipping Company CMA CGM, and as you can see from the picture, an unusual design. This model, and several others we made from designs by Zaha Hadid Architects, can currently be seen at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Perspective: Models or Art?
A few of the recent commissions we have undertaken have ended up being shown in art galleries.

Mauro Perrucchetti, famous for his sculptures and displays of resin cast Jelly Babies, recently commissioned us to help with a number of his pieces. One particular item is an approximately 1:100 scale model of a 65-storey sky scraper loosely based on the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building in New York. This consists of 65 floors made from laser cut clear acrylic with the elevations made from 7500 jelly babies which where cast in resin by Mauro. This model is internally lit and stands 2.7m high. It will be exhibited at Beaux Arts, 22 Cork Street, London W1S 3NA from 15 November.

New work by sculptor Jason Shulman is currently being shown at the Madder Rose Gallery in Whitecross Street, the artist’s first solo London show. We helped produce a work of art called Solpadeine. We laser-cut the profiles in black and white which Jason then used to create the sculpture, thus described by the Gallery: ’Solpadeine is a recurring theme, a muse. By exploring his conflicted desire for the fulfilment of the analgesic promise, the artist exposes the delusory and seductive nature of pain relief. He gives thanks for the brief respite it affords albeit to a slight degree.’

The Team – 25 years’ celebrations
Robert Danton-Rees, founder and director of Capital Models, celebrates 25 years in model making. After winning a Distinction at the Kent Institute of Art and Design where he had enrolled in a Model Making course in 1978, Robert started his career in 1981 at Miners Models in Hong Kong.  Returning to London in 1982, Robert spent the next 12 years at Pipers Modelmakers, sharpening and expanding his skills as a model maker. Robert founded Capital Models in August 1994, spending the first year in a railway arch in Bethnal Green.

The company, which Robert runs with wife and co-director Marcia, now operates from Perseverance Works in Shoreditch. Employing in average 8 full time model makers, Capital Models works with leading firms of architects in London and beyond.

The company invested in its first laser-cutter in 2001, then bought two more in 2003 to supply the growing demand fuelled by fellow model makers, architects, graphic designer, event organisers, fashion and jewellery designers, and artists.

Feature – The benefits of laser-cutting
We bought our first laser in 2001 to improve efficiency and accuracy in the production of our models. We found that this also enabled us to add more detail to models without increasing the costs. As our laser was a nearly twice as large compared to other model makers, we where asked if we could cut items for them, which we where happy to do. This led to being asked quite often to cut larger items that would not fit on our machine. In 2003 we bought a second laser-cutter which was twice as big again and which more than doubled the capacity of our laser-cutting service. Later that year we got a third laser with double the power to cut thicker materials or thin materials twice as fast. We are now one of the very few companies in Central London that offer a laser-cutting service.

Our reasonable rates, fast turnaround and reputation for reliable service mean that we are constantly kept busy. Our laser-cutting service is especially useful for architects who like to make their own models. They can send us the dwg. files of the parts they want and we ship the parts back for self assembly.

We can cut most materials including paper, card, acrylic, thin wood, leather, fabrics, etc. As well as architectural model making, our laser-cutting service covers a wide range of applications including exhibition stands, displays, prototypes, props, awards, point-of-sale, jewellery components, fashion items and much more. The mind boggles.
